Obituary of Walter Henry Horstead

Walter H. "Tommy" Horstead, 74 of Utica, NY passed away on April 25, 2017 with his family by his side.  Walter was born in Elba, AL on July 2, 1942 to Alto and Effie Horstead. 

Walter was educated  in Elba and took some courses at BOCES.  He was employed by GE/ASED for many years. He enjoyed fishing and debating.  Walter was united in marriage to Anna Suggs in Illinois and from that union, two children were born.

Walter is survived by his children: Marilyn Simmon (WI), Walter Horstead, Jr. (IL), four grandchildren: Megann, Andrew and Trevale Horstead (IL) and Tyhese Moore (KY); a brother, Freddie Horstead and a sister, Rev. Dr. Mary Webster, both of Utica, NY; and a companion of 39 years, Juanita Monroe and children: Lorine Monroe, Albert Monroe, Jr., Bernard Monroe, LaVerne (Grady) Kemp, Tina (Alfonzo) Brown of Florida, Michele (Jonathan) Jackson, Emma Monroe and Cynthia Monroe of Virginia; a sister-in-law, Ethel Horstead (AL) and several nieces and nephews.

Walter was baptized in Elba, Al at the Bethlehem Baptist Church at a young age.  When he moved to Utica, he aligned himself with the Metropolitan Baptist Church and St. Matthew Temple COGIC.

The family would like to extend their gratitude tot he staff at the Pines at Utica for their acts of compassion and also to all those who have shown their kindness during this time of grief.
