Obituary of Helen Christine Jackson-Hawkins
Helen passed away peacefully on the early morning of August 22, 2019, after a gradual decline in health. Helen was born in Freedom Hospital in Washington, D.C., to the late Mr. Squire and Cornelia Jackson. Helen was educated in Washington, D.C.; Staunton and Winchester, VA.
Living in Winchester, VA, Helen gave birth to her five children; later relocating to Belle Glade, FL in 1969. She later moved her family to Utica, NY in May 1971. She attended Mohawk Valley Community College enrolled in the Nursing Program. She later moved to Rome, NY in February 2019 to live with her daughter Rev. Cornelia and son-in-law Elder Gregory Brown where she lived until her homegoing transition to be with the Lord.
Helen joined the Baptist Church at age six, a member of Christ Temple Church and Peter Spencer Methodist Church, Utica, NY. In June 1999, she joined Solid Rock Christian Center and served as a Missionary and was ordained an Evangelist under the leadership of her daughter and son-in-law, Rev. Cornelia Jackson-Brown and Elder Gregory Brown.
Helen was very active in her community, ministered in the prisons, Mohawk Correctional Facility, Rome, NY and Marcy Correctional Facility, Marcy, NY. Committee member for Boy Scout Troop 74, Board Member of the Cornhill Community for Change, Utica Chapter of the NAACP, the American Legion Auxiliary for Harold Provost Memorial American Legion Post 1686, Director of the Corn Hill Bears cheerleading team, member of the Black Democratic Club. Also, a member of the Starlight Chapter 6, serving two years as the Worthy Matron.
Helen leaves to cherish her memories her three daughters: Reverend Cornelia (Gregory) Jackson-Brown (Rome, NY); Helen Christine Jackson (Utica, NY); Cindy Hawkins (Utica, NY); three sons: Samuel L. Jackson (Rome, NY); Henry R. (Jennifer Gerou) Jackson (Plattsburgh, NY) and Jonathan K. (Michelle) Jackson (Utica, NY); one sister Margaret Bartlett (Harold) Williams (New London, CT); one brother Edward W. (Otha) Jackson (Utica, NY); nephew Edward W. (Rhonda) Jackson, Jr.; niece Linda Vetrano; cousins: Albert Jackson, Jr.; Jennifer Jackson (Arlington, VA); Miles Jackson; Betty Jackson and Dennis Jackson; God-children: Kevin Jefferson and Larry Jones; as well as a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and friends.
Helen is predeceased by her loving husband Bobby Hawkins; niece Barbara Jackson and God-daughter Diane Nichols.
