Obituary of Sakinah Nafeesah Mujahid

Please share a memory of Sakinah to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sakinah Mujahid’s birthday is February 29, and if you ever asked her age, she would say that she stopped counting at age 30. ☺ Sakinah was born in The Bronx at the “Old Lincoln Hospital” to Charlotte Marie and Emmet Harvey. She was the youngest of 10 children. Curtis(Butch), Elsie Rebecca (Becky), David (Bruzzy), Edward (Bub), Carol Anne, Katherine (Kitten), Kenneth (Kenny), Wesley, and Jonathan Guy (J.R.). 7 out of 9 have preceded her in death. Sakinah carried herself with Poise and Confidence that shook the room when her feet touched the floor. She was outspoken and commanded respect. She had a motherly aura and a big heart. Her favorite color was purple. Purple was perfect for her to love, because the color purple represents royalty. Sakinah loved her family. She went to great lengths to cover them in every way possible. Many people who have crossed paths with Sakinah have stories of what she did for them. Just the same, many people have stories of how Sakinah put opportunities in place for them. People will also tell you how she helped them get through tough times by just being there. Sakinah liked music and loved to laugh. She had a song for every occasion and a joke for every situation. She grew up on 167st and College ave in the Bronx. She attended Community Elementary School 53, Junior High School, Jordan L. Mott 22, and graduated from Morris High School. ( all located in The Bronx.) She, later on, studied early childhood education and child psychology at Tuoro College ( located in lower Manhattan). Sakinah also learned American Sign language at Hostos Community College. Sakinah has taken care of a village of children and their parents since she was 13 years old. By 1992 Sakinah was married and had given birth to her 5 children. In 1996 Sakinah embraced Islam and later on, Legally changed her name to Sakinah Nafeesah Mujahid. Sakinah was a faithful member of Majidus Sabur of New York City. Under the guide of Imam Umar Abdul-Jalil. She was a devoted, faithful Muslima who lived by the teachings of Islam. When she stood before Allah and said, “Ashadu Illa Illaha Ill Allah; Ashadu Ana Muhammadan Rasul Allah.” (I bear witness that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad was his last messenger.) She stood on that FIRMLY. Sakinah dubbed the nickname “Pretty Momma” in 1998 when her first grandchild was born. All of the children under her would refer to her as, “Pretty Momma” for generations to come. Sakinah was known as “Ladie” amongst her peers. Sakinah had the spirit of an entrepreneur. She braided hair for money in the ’80s. She sold Avon, Mary Kay, incense and oil, sea moss and health elixirs, and detergent throughout the years. When she was in the mood, she even made her clothes. Sakinah worked as a security guard for 9 years and proceeded to open a part time daycare center inside her Bronx apartment, 3125 Park Ave Apt 3F. It was called “Pretty Momma’s Daycare.” Pretty Momma’s Daycare was in service for 5 years. During that time, Sakinah had remarried. She got married to Abdur Rahman Mujahid on March 31, 2000. Then, she took in, cared for, and adopted her great-nieces and nephew. She met her diary and Goddaughter in 2007, adding to her already huge family. Sakinah and her husband uprooted their family and moved to Boonville, New York, to break generational curses. It wasn’t long before she opened a new daycare center in Rome, New York, and named it “Ladie Cares LLC.” So talented, so beautiful, funny, very witty, and quick on her feet. Sakinah is loved and will be missed.
