Obituary of Sylvester Tyrone Williams, Jr.

Sylvester T. Williams, Jr. 84, also known as “Bampa”,” Popa'' and “Mr. Brown” by family and friends, was called home on February 20, 2023. Sylvester was born on March 13, 1938 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to the late Sylvester Williams and Elinor Jarrett. Educated at Atkins High School where he excelled in his studies. He also learned to play the trombone and joined the marching band. After graduation, Sylvester began thinking of his future, hence he decided to join the U.S. Navy. On July 8, 1955 he arrived at his place of entry in Raleigh, North Carolina with a rank of SR (Seaman recruit). The career choice he made was as a Boilerman. This career choice would lay the foundation for his life after the Navy. Upon being honorably discharged, Sylvester began his civilian career at the Apex Boiler Repair Company in New York. After retiring from Apex and relocating to Utica, NY he decided to do some side jobs and eventually became self-employed as a general contractor. Faith and family were very important in Sylvester’s life. He attended Free In Christ Pentecostal Church. Family time included fishing, cooking, football and playing spades. Cookouts were always a hit; his smile and laughter were infectious. He also played a mean game of spades, that means when it was time to play - game on! His family meant the world to him. No matter what the need he would always make the time for each and every family member, friends and people who just passed through. Left to cherish his memories are his soulmate: Linda Leggett of over 28 years; children: Theresa, Sylvester III, Robin, Patricia, Carolyn, Kenneth, Rhonda and Lisa; stepchildren: Reggie and Yavetta; brother Dennis Williams and special friend Walencia Green; as well as a host of other family members and friends. Sylvester is predeceased by his parents Sylvester Williams and Elinor Jarrett; son Vincent and stepdaughter Serena, who he affectionately called “Re Re”. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at Utica Rehabilitation Center; a special “thank you” to the late Mary Johnson, who took the extra time to care for Sylvester’s needs and to all those who have reached out during our time of grief.
